What is the difference between outbox and sent box

The outbox folder is a space where all the outgoing messages are temporarily stored. During the process of composing a message the data automatically gets saved as a draft in your outbox. The sent folder on the other hand is the space where all your messages move once they have been sent to the recipient. The outbox folder is the first step in the process of sending a message. The outbox folder temporarily holds all your messages that you have formed. It is a safe place for you messages as they remain there until a secure connection has been established between the mail serve and the receiver.

After the process of composing a message when it is sent it directly moves to the outbox folder where it stands at hold until a secure connection is available with the SMPT Simple Mail Transfer Protocol server leading to the connection being established. The other messages which are also commnly stored in the outbox are the messages are the ones which have failed to successfully deliver to the recipient due to any internet connectivity issue. While the messages are stored in this folder you can also further re-edit your messages if required, as the messages have still not been sent.

Once the mail server reconnects with the recipient and the message is successfully sent to the receiver the message will no longer remain in the outbox folder and with transfer automatically to the sent folder.

The sent folder is the final stage in the process of sending a message. The sent folder commonly stores all the messages that have been successfully sent by the sender to the recipient. All the messages the messages that have been sent through the mail server are stored here.

Reading this leads me to think that perhaps Outlook just displays things differently when sending messages. Those other email programs might just be moving the message from the Outbox to the Sent folder earlier in the send process.

So true. That device between the keyboard and the chair is responsible for most of our computer problems. Another possibility although unlikely is that outlook is already in the process of receiving mails, and this is slow. In this case the sending will wait until receiving is complete. However every version of outlook I have run shows a message somewhere at the bottom of the window saying when it is sending or receiving, so you should be able to see if it is one of these that is taking some time.

I read what to do but do not understand what it means for me to do. The only variable is that I downloaded realplayer about the same time. I have been using gmail with no problems many times but now the two emails go nowhere.

I have to hit edit to get to send in the outbox. I would recommend compacting the PST instead of starting a new one. Also, my understanding is that in recent versions of Outlook IMAP accounts are stored in ost files, not pst. Comments violating those rules will be removed. Comments that don't add value will be removed, including off-topic or content-free comments, or comments that look even a little bit like spam.
